Your engagement photos will be one of the most exciting parts of your engagement when you look back at them. Whether you’re using them for your wedding web page, or decorating your wedding reception. It’s always good to have memorabilia from special moments like this. There are some common mistakes couples make so why not avoid them ahead of time. From selection of a photographer, to things like outfit choices and the timing of the day to catch the sunset.

1. To many outfit choices or not enough outfit choices

For your engagement photos it’s best to bring clothing that is comfortable and to make sure it compliments what your partner is wearing. You will be in that outfit for an hour or two and feeling uncomfortable in clothing can restrict movement and the flow of the photoshoot. Coming up with a colour scheme is also useful and will translate well in your pictures. Another suggestion is to have two outfits for the occasion so you can get a variety of looks in your photoshoot, casual and some glamourous. Keep in mind that it’s best to keep the amount of outfits to two. Depending on how long the photoshoot session is booked for will determine how many outfit changes can happen. Too many outfit changes will take time away from capturing beautiful candids and staged moments with you and your spouse.

2. Time of the day to shoot

Picking the right time slot to have a photoshoot is important since photography revolves a lot around lighting. The right type of lighting at sunset or golden hour creates a romantic glow that illuminates each image. Checking a weather station to see when is sunset does the trick so you and your photographer can plan which day and time to shoot. It’s important to start your shoot a little earlier in order to catch the sunset. This way your photographer has plenty of time to shoot and capture this wonderful lighting.

3. Not showing up on time

This one is very important because not showing up on time ruins the flow of the entire photoshoot. It cuts down on the time of the shoot along with the natural light and the overall feel of the session. Sometimes unexpected issues like traffic come up so it is important to leave early for your shoot to avoid being late. Also making sure your hair, makeup and outfit are done first to maximize on time and to ensure that your shoot is mostly spent taking pictures and not getting ready.

4. To many location changes

Changing locations is a fantastic thing to do because you get a variety of different photos with different scenery and ambiance. This looks fantastic but going to too many different locations without proper planning can lead to running out of time during the shoot. It will cause both the photographer and the couple to feel rushed. I personally suggest that if you do pick multiple locations to plan accordingly with the amount of travel time it takes and how much time is spent at each location. This will put your mind at ease while commuting to all your locations.

5. Not getting Alot of candid moments

In photography, sometimes the best moments that occur are candid moments between you and your spouse. When he/she/they or them whispers something funny in your ear or lean in for a passionate kiss. These moments can potentially lead to the best photos of the day because they are captured without a staged appearance. Allow your photographer to catch these unprompted moments when you and your spouse forget the camera is rolling.
